Introduction

Animated Systems // BBC Pavilion Cannes is a computational design project in which each student would learn, experiment, and explore computational software techniques and testing its abilities and limitations.

1. BBC Studios Project Overview

BBC Studios, known as BBC Pavilion Cannes, was designed by Universal design studios and Giles Miller studio in 2019. The aim of the project was to give a bold statement of technological advancement and creative thinking and to make this project a turning point for public commercial space design.

Deconstructing the elements of the facade

2. Deconstructing the facade

A clearer understanding of what steps to follow in the project happened through a simple diagram that deconstructs the facade into elements and in a simplified way, trying to relate to the movement or action that would be taken in grasshopper.

In this stage, the project is getting more in contact with the components that will be used in the software like extrusion and array, and is a hierarchal order from start to end of the script.

4. Variations and configurations

In the grasshopper script, elements like height, array value, attractor points, and curves, are changeable. In the examples shown in the previous images, there are variations in height, amount of columns, wall curvature, and rotation of the shading disks. All these variables are controlled by the number sliders in grasshopper.

6. Animation

The animation is done through the Centipede animation component in grasshopper, along with camera views, controlled by the centipede component as well, which facilitates the process of exporting frames and allows more flexibility of overlapping camera movements and animations for more interesting results and more advanced animation.
