Brief Definition of Building information Modelling:

A technique where digital, 3D building design and construction plans are used to guide and monitor construction processes, has a major impact on the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries, saving professionals in these sectors time and money.

Brief Definition of Robotics

Interdisciplinary branch of computer science and engineering. Involves design, construction, operation and use of robots. The goal of robotics is to design machines that can help assist humans.

Opportunities in Robotics and BIM collaboration:

  • On site Monitoring: Terrain/object inspection, and keep the building information model up-to-date.
  • Assisting Dangerous Tasks: Carrying heavy loads, digging, drilling, cutting, parts assembly and other.
  • Structures Fabrication: Custom fabrication and assembly could be develop on site.
  • Sustainability: By managing building performance. Eg. Temperature, lighting, air quality, etc.

Topic description:

  1. Robotic Fabrication provides a new opportunity to design based on data. During this latest years we had been exploring a wave of information, that could be relevant for to forecast possible scenarios, decision making and risk assessment in (AEC) industry. The following research is based on three key properties:
  • Improvements in the construction industry by robotics (Waste management, schedules, risk assessments…).
  • Workflow from start to end from construction process by robotic fabrication.
  • Which information is relevant to model for building which include robotic fabrication workflows.

Expert 1: Helena Homsi, Researcher and Roboticist, Helena is an architect with a master in robotics, testing the conventional boundaries in the field through digital fabrication and computational design. She is now working as a researcher and roboticist at La Máquina by Noumena.

Expert 2: Joseph, Los Angeles based Architect develops robotics solutions for architectural and construction systems. He initiated a project for low – cost housing construction methods in Armenia for families displaced from natural disaster and war. Currently 4,000 families remain in temporary housing. His workflow involves prefabricated rapid manufacturing of building framing & components for on site fabrication and manual / robot assisted assembly.
