This week the Master in City & Technology has kicked off two of the courses of its third-term: the pilot project thesis studio Design for the Responsive City led by IaaC Academic Director Areti Markopoulou and Foster+Partners Bruno Moser, and the SenseAble City Seminar led by Carlo Ratti, assisted by IaaC Alumni  Antonio Atripaldi and Matteo Silverio.

Pilot Project Thesis Studio: Design for the Responsive City

Design for the Responsive City is a joint collaboration of the Master in City & Technology and Foster+Partners Urban Design Group – headed by Bruno Moser. The Foster + Partners Urban Design team consists of specialists from a range of backgrounds working with project teams to focus on issues such as spatial structure and hierarchy, the distribution of land uses and density of urban form, building typologies and passive urban design.

The aim of the studio is to define visions and design proposals for the Worli BDD Chawl, a 27 hectares residential district located in Mumbai, India. The area has been the object of a design competition finalized to the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of a high-density multifunctional district. Through a methodology that will explore the potential of Information and Communication Technologies, the studio will focus on the needs of the local population.

SenseAble City Seminar

Structured in four appointments, and closing with Carlo Ratti’s open lecture on the 30th of May, the SenseAble City Seminar will investigate how digital technologies, as well as smart planning and the use of responsive sensors, can improve the quality of our public spaces, addressing the main challenges of tomorrow’s increasingly complex, interconnected society.

Carlo Ratti practices in Italy and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he directs the Senseable City Lab. An architect and engineer by training, he is currently serving as a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council for Urban Management and has been curator of the Future Food District pavilion for the 2015 World Expo in Milan.

Drawing on Carlo Ratti’s experience at Carlo Ratti Associati and MIT Senseable City Lab, the course will focus on a series of case studies which provide clear examples as base for the development of a final design project.
