Digital Matter Intelligent Constructions // Final Presentations
The Digital Matter Intelligent Constructions Research Studio, led by Areti Markopoulou, with Faculty Assistants Alexandre Dubor and Angelos Chronis, had its final presentations on Tuesday the 28th of June 2016.
The presentations were discussed with an international jury formed by Izaskun Chinchilla (Izaskun Chinchilla Architects), Elena Rocchi (Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts), Ilker Bayer (Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia Smart Materials Group), Carlos Sáez Comet (Velcro Companies) and Manuel Kreutzer (ETH Zurich, Materiability Network); as well as in house members, Mathilde Marengo (IAAC Academic Coordinator), Maite Bravo (IAAC Urban Sciences Lab & Theory Faculty), Eduard Cabay (IAAC Faculty), Carmelo Zappulla (IAAC Faculty) and Jonathan Minchin (IAAC Green Fab Lab coordinator).
In the framework of the Digital Matter Intelligent Constructions studio, students have developed case studies exploring construction systems to be applied at architectural scale, producing non-rigid, responsive and multi-functional materials and construction systems. The seven project proposals tackle questions regarding Material Intelligence:
ResponseAble – by Nikolaos Argyros, Maria-Klairi Chartsia, Sameera Chukkapalli, Jakub Havlik – is a smart surface storing real time local data, reacting to wind and human decisions. ManyForms – by Utsav Mathur, Jean Sebastian Munera Reyes, Connor Stevens – is a responsive, shape-shifting system of hacked nylon muscles applicable at the architectural scale. FoamAttic – by Nisarg Sheth, Inthat Ueasak-aree, Naitik Shah – is an insulation panel made with hacked foam capable to reduce energy consumption. Nano-tone – by Karthikeyan Dhanabalan, Khushboo Shrenik Kumar Jain – is a shape-shifting plastic capsule containing acetone, at the base of a swarm pattern reacting to the weather. Can bricks work as machines? Memory Brick – by Yasamin Khalilbeigi – investigates controlled evaporation by shape memory alloy valves. Is 4D printing the future of food waste? Piel Vivo – by Lili Tayefi, Christopher Wong, Noor El-Gewely – explores gelatin-based bio-plastic materials supplemented with granular organic matter from food waste. ProSkin – by Burak Paksoy, Chenthur Raaghav, Ingried Ramirez, Robert Staples – transforms silicon and polypropylene with a coating of graphene into a smart, responsive material.
