THE BREAF:
From Gaudi’s physical chain models, Frei Otto’s tensile model studies to Phillips Blocks funicular structures design with RhinoVAULT, natural forces help mold balanced and optimized
structures. With the aid of interactive physics simulations we can create digital materiality and real life behavior as a form finding protocol.
THE GOAL . . .
of the project was to create a simple geometry, which could be easily modified to simulate the adaptable installation placed on the roof of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia.
THE PROCESS:
Using Kangaroo as the main engine of the simulation in Grasshopper, the installation is created by placing the simple closed curve directly in Rhino. Based on the shape of the curve, the installation is changing it’s appearance. Installation consists of the system/net of pipes of 25mm diameter which all together creates an uniformed structure. By finding the middle point of the structure, the defined amount of middle elements are chosen to create hanging bubbles on the structure.
Kangaroo plugin helps to see the transformation of the structure, which consist of three parts:
1. creation of the meshes – bubbles inside the structure
2. creation of the structure – pipe system, which in anchored on the certain points of the geometry and deformed – tentioned towards the bubbles.
3. creation of small springs which connects the bubbles to the structure.
