Machinic Protocols Presents: Free Hand Automation - A Live Experiment
Remote from the mind, the hand acts as an automated machine that executes drawings according to a predetermined protocol.
On April 19th, an automatic drawing exhibition will be held in Sant Lluc, resulting from a performative act emerging from the creative confrontation between artists from Cercle Artístic Sant Lluc and computer experts from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC), from the Master in Advanced Architecture‘s research line Machinic Protocols directed by Edouard Cabay.
In order to try to reproduce a drawing made by an algorithm, and without having seen it previously, artists will draw following predetermined instructions.
At the end of 120 minutes of experiment, the hand-made drawings will be exhibited next to their computed equivalent, making visible, in this way, the difference of results in the execution of the same protocol by two different means: the hand and the computer.
The experiment puts the human body in the position of a machine: it tries to separate it from its intuition and instinct, to use it as an operator of gestures determined by an external protocol. It addresses the role of the person in creativity, automation and artificial intelligence.
