MULTIDOTS & LIGHTREE

CONCEPT

When in Valldaura Labs, what first calls our attention is the wild nature around. Therefore, the two following projects have their concepts and physical models inspired on it, combining different natural materials found in Valldaura, such as the bamboos, trees, plants and woods.

1* MULTREE

The first one is the MULTREE, which is one simple node designed to have multiple functions. Its aim is to structure the furniture but also to be a part of it, as it is a vase and at the same time a small table. The circular vase made on the 3D printer is perforated with small circles to continue the same shape of all the materials used to build the table, like the bamboo pipe, the vase, the node and the piece of wood. This last one closes the vase on the top, which also has a whole in its middle for the plant to fit in. The three supports on the bottom of the vase are connected to one bamboo each, which allows the furniture to stand up.

PROCESS

3D PRINTING
WE STARTED USING A SPEED OF 150mm/s, BUT IT WAS TOO FAST, WHICH RESULTED IN SOME FAILURES. AFTER REALIZING THAT, WE CHANGED TO 80mm/S AND WAITED 8 HOURS UNTIL THE MODEL WAS READY.

CONSTRUCTION
EACH 3 PIPES OF THE NODE WERE DESIGNED TO BE SLIGHTLY BIGGER THAN THE BAMBOOS SO THEY COULD BE FIXED INSIDE THEM AND ALLOW THE STABILITY OF THE TABLE.

CUTTING WOOD
TO CLOSE THE VASE AND USE IT AS A TABLE, WE CUT A CIRCULAR PIECE OF WOOD WITH A WHOLE IN ITS CENTER FOR THE PLANT TO FIT IN. ON THE BOTTOM OF IT, WE PUT A SMALL CIRCULAR PIECE OF WOOD WITH THE SAME SIZE OF THE VASE’S DIAMETER SO IT COULD BE FIXED AND STABLE.

2* LIGHTREE

The design of the LIGHTREE was inspired on Valldaura’s nature, but more specifically on its trees. Observing the shape of the trees from the top, we began to draw the lamp’s base. After that, a structure was originated and developed from its base with the aim to provide the transparency of light combined with the movement and complexity of the trees, resulting in an interlaced perforated shape.
