STEP 00

BARCELONA’S natural growth

The city is characterized by an excess
of people (density) citizens, tourists, workers
of money (high prices) for living, renting, working
thus becoming stressful and unaffordable
As a response, it tends to grow
towards decentralized areas
(as it did with Poblenou area)

Well connected mobility infrastructure
in-development enhancing the river’s potential
the strategy taken here is not to substitute but to occupy
the existing industrial building

STEP 01

The factory is kept “as it is” both space and use
A new parasite is placed on top of the industrial building
as a skin optimized to get solar radiation
the energy it is transformed, stored and later sold
producing a high money income.

Once the envelope is completed, its starts generating money
by selling energy to externals.
The factory is now occupied:
space mantained use changed
The industrial activity is moved to the parasite (together with offices and housing)

and the existing building becomes now a reclaim to attract people.

STEP 03

The money income from the external sells (envelope),
startup offices, industry, housing… (moneymaker interior)
and the events (factory building)
are reinvested to build the in-between space,
so that the leisure landscape is not only the linear void,
but it ties together the building in all directions (cross-shape)

The building as a city within a city.
