ENDLESS CITY

How do you imagine the city of the future? Will it be like the ones we know today or bigger, or taller? Do we usea cars or other ways of transportation?

In this seminar we took what we know about urbanism and explore the possibilities of a city in the future.

My case study was the Eden Project.

The Eden Project is the largest botanical garden in the world. It is a scientific experiment which uses a highly innovative technology to create different climates.

In search of the most effective way to contain the different microclimates, Grimshaw was inspired by an organic form, the geodesic dome invented by Buckminster Fuller U.S., which proposed to encompass the peak with the least possible surface.

The project consists of 8 and geodesic domes forming two biomes of trees and plants. There is also an outdoor biome, a visitor center, an outdoor amphitheater and an access road.

The idea was to use the bio domes as public spaces along the city, but as the project evolve the idea of the domes became something different until they became a empty space in a building.

The process used was as follow:

Firs I used pixel along a plan

Then I created metaballs

The metaballs became spaces in the building

I pixelated the metaballs to create sharp angels

By combining the building multiple times, you can generate a infinite city.

And by adding or subtracting parts of the building you can generate public spaces and common areas.
