Last May 19th to 23rd, Barcelona hosted the 19th edition of Construmat, the International Construction Faire. Within this new edition, and with the suggestive change of name to“Beyond Building Barcelona – Reengineering Construmat”, Fira de Barcelona set the challenge of including the Innovation Area to the traditional features of the Faire. For this reason assigned IaaC | Fab Lab Barcelona the mission to design and execute the content and exhibition for the new Pavilion of Innovation 2015. The Pavilion of Innovation 2015 presented the latest ideas and construction paradigms emerging from international excellence in research and pilot projects, forming the basis of future buildings and cities. Novel and reactive materials, advanced digital/robotic manufacturing techniques and responsive environments were the key topics presented, towards shaping the future of the building industry. The Pavilion of Innovation 2015 was officially opened with a tour by Areti Markopoulou, IAAC Academic Director, Tomas Diez, Director of Fab Lab Barcelona, and the President of the IAAC Board, Oriol Soler, with the Mayor of Barceona, Xavier Trias, the Deputy Mayor Antoni Vives, and the Chief Architect of Barcelona, Vicente Guallart.

The Pavilion of Innovation 2015 featured 3 sections: EXHIBITION, WORKSHOPS and a SYMPOSIUM. The Exhibition presented select pioneer academic research projects and prototypes, as well as a limited number of the same from the BEYOND | CALL FOR PROJECTS. The aim was to offer a matchmaking space for research and innovative projects to meet construction and technology companies, constructing the bridge connecting innovation with the industry and businesses, and bringing possibilities for projects to be implemented in real world developments. The Exhibition was curated in 4 diverse thematic sections sections:Responsive Environments, Rapid Prototyping, Novel & Smart Materials, andDistributed Manufacturing, all central questions in the future (not to mention the present) of the construction industry.

The Workshops were centered on generating a hands on experience, offering a learning by doing platform inside the Construmat space for students and professionals to directly interact and learn about the techniques used to develop some of the projects exhibited. These workshops included: Computational Couture (see video here), Building with Robots,Making things talk, Drones, and WikiHouse (see video here).
