Concept
This case study investigates the algorithmic decomposition of a star in a hexagon. This study is carried out through Grasshopper Software, creating different star pattern variations in a recursive system. The generated design is then projected onto Meis van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion walls, creating a generative design that forms a screen covering the pavilion walls. Mashrabiya is a potential design for a vertical hydroponic farm that can multiply over time through a mathematical understanding of the star pattern’s grid system.
Design Process
The design process started with different variations of a base geometry of a star in a hexagon. After a star pattern had been chosen from the variations, it’s projected on the pavilion’s exterior walls. The pattern repeats itself and scales up with every loop.
