INC ZERO
The Data Driven Tower – Barcelona
CHAPTER I [ Solar Data Driven Facade]
01.Form Finding
02.Sun Path Analysis to obtain sun vectors
03.Direct Sun Hours Analysis
A second skin was parametrically developed with the sizes of openings reacting to the sun hours received by the tower through out the year. Hence, with regions receiving the most amount of sunlight, the opening sizes were smaller and vice versa.
It was observed that the South and West facing façades received the most amount of sunlight through the year in Barcelona and hence the concentration of smaller sized openings were higher .

CHAPTER II [ Kinetic Façade]
As an alternate method of developing a second skin for the tower, this kinetic façade reacts to the sun path during the day wherein the openings close as sunlight falls on it over the course of the day.

CHAPTER III [Spatial Daylight Autonomy]
The 20th floor in the tower was selected to conduct a daylight analysis in the interior of the tower. This analysis was observed first with no shading devices as indicated below.
And then by optimising the shading device – in this case louvers- using galapagos, the SDA was analyzed and the findings were as indicated below.
Given it’s rotated geometry, the tower creates shade for its lower floors thus decreasing sunlight in its interiors.
CHAPTER IV [Energy Modelling]
The floor plan generated to analyze SDA was used to obtain the energy consumption when using 40% glazing with horizontal/vertical louvers and 80% glazing with horizontal/vertical louvers.
01. Cooling and Heating Energy Consumption with 40% Glazing
02. Cooling and Heating Energy Consumption with 80% Glazing
After analyzing the different conditions, the most optimum louvers were the 40% glazing with horizontal louvers.
03. Photovoltaic Solar Panels- Optimization
CHAPTER V [Optimization for Solar Performance]
01. Building Orientation
BARCELONA
Warm Climate Zone | Zone 3
Optimum angle of rotation according to direct sun hours =89.1 degrees
02. Louvers Orientation
Optimum angle of tilt according to solar radiation =319 degrees
Optimum angle of rotation according to solar radiation =42 degrees
03. Context Shading Orientation
Optimum angle of rotation according to solar radiation =48 degrees
The shading canopies were optimized and located at the foot of the tower to enhance the shade cast by the tower on the site.
