Indicator analysis for a statistical composite index
Step 1 – Theoretical framework
_________________________
Topic
The aim of the thesis is to mitigate the housing crisis by modelling urban dynamics based on the principles of diversity, equitability, and affordability to ensure inclusion in twenty-first-century cities through a digital urban design platform. For this, first, it is required to understand the social and housing conditions in the selected study case of this Thesis which is the city of Barcelona. This notebook illustrated the steps performed towards developing a social development index and a housing equitability index for this purpose. The development of this index is yet in process and is incomplete at this point. Further steps are required.
Related existing indexes
The municipal of Barcelona use a social vulnerability index(IVS) and index for disposable income(Index RFD). These have been taken as a reference while creating the Social Development Index and the Housing Equitability index for this thesis.
Step 2 – Elementary indicators
________________________
Approach – Subjective
The index is being developed using a subjective understanding as an Urban Designer and Architect.
Selection of indicators
5 elementary indicators have been chosen for each of the indexes. The following section shows box plots for the values of all the neighbourhoods in each of the indicators. This is done to understand the trends in the last decade. Selected neighbourhood values have been plotted as stripplot over the boxplot. This is done to understand the relation of selected neighbourhood values to that of the rest of Barcelona. The graphs are made using seaborn library in google colab and the data processing is done using pandas in google colab.
Social development indicators
1. Education
2. Health
3. Unemployment
4. Nationality
5. Age
Housing equitability indicators
1. Land-use distribution
2. Size of housing units
3. Price of purchase
4. Average monthly rent
5. Type of ownership
Next Steps
Further steps include normalizing the indicator values and later creating the index value. These step will be done as the thesis progresses into the next stage.
