1. Mapping Proposals
1.1.a. Metro card count
The idea is to rationalise human movement and map their density by counting metro train cards.
Ideology:
To count the t-10 cards and Hola BCN cards off the dust bins in one or 2 metro station and adjacent bus stops to map density of people. The idea involves monitoring dust bins in 25meter radius of metro and accounts for density and pattern within 1-2Kms radius.
Assertions:
- 1 percentage of people in Barcelona use public transport.
- 70% of metro commuters use t-10 travel cards and 5% of commuters (transit tourist majorly) use various HOLA BCN cards.
- Rational is derived from the fact that, average maximum walking distance for people being 7Kms from metro to destination. (concentric circles with incremental diameters to depict that)
Limitations:
- Accounts for only 1 percentage of people who commute through metro and other public transport.
- We can’t account for the other 25% of other public transport commuters.
- Doesn’t account for variables of duration and recurrences of travel.
1.1.b. Interactive survey pavilion
The idea is to rationalise human movement and map their density by installing a public awareness interactive kiosk to punch and go.
Ideology:
To install a kiosk for public awareness and make it interactive by making ‘yes or no’ questions to ensure quick response and thereby get a number in terms of users.
Assertions:
- Assuming it doesn’t come out as public nuisance.
- Fool proof in terms of precision of location and accuracy of number of people.
- Multiple points for information collection. This can be installed anywhere from parking meter to pedestrian crossing to maximise usage in waiting time.
Limitations:
- Doesn’t account for variables of duration and recurrences of travellers.
- Variability in terms of public abuse.
- Trial and error in terms of having to man the kiosk or to leave it open to public interaction.
