SITE LOCATION
Macau is one of the world’s most densely populated areas. The region, with only 32.9 km², is a peninsula surrounded by sea with no rivers, and is therefore susceptible to experience extreme heat with droughts as freshwater resources are scarce.
The intervention site is situated in a neighborhood with little tree cover, and a lot of concrete. A so called “heat island”
CLIMATE ANALYSIS
The climate in Macau can become somewhat extreme with the hottest months reaching an average temperature of 29.5°C (85°F) and the coldest is February at 15°C (59°F). The wettest month is June with an average of 230mm of rain..
Summer radiation vs winter radiation
PSEUDO CODE
This initial climate analysis study revealed that the strategy should bring self-shading to the ground level making it more accessible for the user to enjoy during summer times.v
The integration with kangaroo physics tools allows the script to select the option that can respond to summer wind rose, as the structure is expected to work in cooling down the summer wind.
After establishing the initial parameters for the pavilion, the next step was to optimise its shape against radiation, minimizing the solar impact on it.
OPTIMISATION
Using ladybug the position and orientation of the rotation of the pavilion was optimised for minimum sun exposure.
