Architects: Nuru Karim

Location: Lonavla, Maharashtra, India.

Year: 2013

Assignment: The assignment was to create a façade of undulating vertical louvers (fins) that had a sin profile curve along the Y and Z axis.

The main objective was to decode the parameters of the façade which are the sin curved louvers and the distance between them in order to achieve a certain level of aesthetic and transparency.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

‘AMET school’,by Nuru Karim, is a 6,500 m2 international school in lonavala, Maharashtra, India. Taking advantage of the picturesquehillside of the site, the design seeks to directly engage with the setting by framing and releasing views through an undulating elevation composed of rib-like fins. Serving as a day time educational facility as well as a venue for cultural activities for the local community, the multi-storey building aims to serve as a visual marker within the neighborhood. The front elevation is composed of a series of vertical fin elements that line the complete length of the structure. Subtly shifting in shape and profile, the treatment provides solar shading and varying light conditions for the interior. Porous in views and sunlight, the school engages with the immediate site to create an interior layout that constantly looks out onto the surrounding landscape. the sequencing of space withdraws conventional and familiar architectural patterns to create an abstract composition that provides a sense of discovery and exploration in its function.

 * The topography of the fins system is inspired by the surrounds and provides solar protection to the interiors.
