THE ANTHILL – SELF SUFFICIENT BUILDINGS STUDIO SYSTEM DESIGN

System designed based on eliminating the concept of waste, foraging the sorroundings for discarded resources (sewage, food, materials) and upcycling them into energy and goods.

As a proof of concept coffee waste was collected in the classroom during the term and was innoculated with Pleurotus Ostreatus, an edible mushroom. When the mushroom growth cycle ends the spent growth medium can be used as a sustrate to cultivate trees or other plants. In this way discarded organic matter is transformed into food, and nutrients contiually cycled while producing added value at the same time.
