The View House, located in Rosario, Argentina, is a 296m2 house built in a 2113sqm corner plot. The architects Diego Arraigada and Johnson Marklee, designed the house addressing two conflicting parameters:

1. Creating microclimates within the house by relating the interiors with the exterior – this was addressed by creating apertures that define the views.
2. Ensuring privacy – this is addressed by the position of the apertures.
3. ATMOSPHERICAL RELATION: Defying the traditional architecture of having 4 elevations, the View House has a continuous external facade that intensifies the relation with the exterior atmosphere, unfolding a series of picturesque views created by the different sized apertures with different orientation.

POSITIONAL RELATION: The repetition of the geometric subtractions has created a dynamic external appearance. Also , the position of the subtractions in relati
on with the position, size and orientation of the windows is the answer to the parameters that the houses depended upon (Privacy and Defining views of the external atmosphere from inside the house).

ENVIRONMENTAL RELATION: The huge windows present on all the facades also help in reducing the HVAC and the electrical demands of the house, by lighting the house sufficiently.

The subtractions and the position of the windows is said to ensure privacy in the house. They define the views of the exterior from the inside of the house. However, the degree of privacy is unsure as the view to the inside of the house from the outside is questionable.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF ATMOSPHERE

Atmosphere is the aura around an object generated by the object. It is a swirling climate of the intangible effects created by the physical form. Atmosphere is in fact emanated by the object itself.

Designing a building would eventually lead to the design of an atmosphere. However, it is the architect’s choice to either consider the atmosphere to be influential aspect of the design or to not consider it at all.Wright argued that atmosphere is embedded in a building like the roots embedded in the soil. However, there existed a class of architects who marginalized the atmosphere while designing. Nonetheless, these buildings created their own intangible effects, which was nothing but the atmosphere emanating from the building.

In the representation of the buildings, the representation of the atmosphere around the building sets the mood of theobject. The representation of the sky and the trees in perfect weather creates a mystical aura emanating from the object. This aura is the relationship between the atmosphere outside and the atmosphere within. By entering a space, it is a shift of the microclimate from the outside to the inside. Thus, Architecture can be defined as a play of the microclimates.

To focus radically on the architecture of atmosphere would be to displace architecture creating atmospheres as per the choice of the users. However, such a design would question the role of the architect in controlling the atmosphere.

As much as we debate the considerations of the atmosphere at all, the buildings, spaces, drawings and lines breathe their own aura, thus creating an atmosphere of their own. As architects like Le Corbusier and Wright debate on the atmospherics of architecture, it cannot be taught as in a school of architecture. Young architects have to grow up breathing the atmosphere generated by the drawings, objects, spaces, etc.

As much as architects try to define atmosphere and control it, it can neither be controlled or defined. Its a magical illusion that exists around every creature. Atmosphere is beyond any form of analysis. As architects, we can only create micro climates that responds to the other atmospheres, thus creating its own!

RESEARCH TOPIC: ADVANCED INTERACTION

As an architect, I strongly believe that atmosphere cannot be marginalized. It has to perceived in the architects own notion and spaces be designed to merge the atmosphere of the outside and the atmosphere radiated by the building itself. As much as it cannot be taught or analysed, I believe that the perception of atmosphere varies. The perception of the atmosphere by the architect might be different as that of the user. This again questions the role of the architecture with respect to the atmosphere. I believe it is necessary for architects to design interfaces that help the users create their own atmosphere.
